With Yell, the website stays Yell's. With us, it's yours.

Yell's own terms say the content it creates for you belongs to Yell, and your site can't move to another host without Yell's say-so. With us you see your design in about five minutes, before you pay a penny, and you can take your website with you.

What is Yell good at?

Yell has helped local businesses for 60 years, and it says more than 150,000 UK businesses have had a website built by it. Its specialists build the site, write it for the services and places you want to be found for, and keep it fresh with blog posts.

Yell also sells listings, reviews and paid advertising, and says it is the UK's number one for managed digital advertising.

Who does each job

Yell builds the website for you too. The difference is in the small print: when you see it, who makes the changes, and who owns it at the end.

What does My Webby cost?

Your website is £29.99 a month, including VAT. That gets you the website built for you, your domain, the hosting and a website specialist to make changes when you need them. Online booking comes with the customer hub at £29.99 a month more, and business email is priced per mailbox. The add-ons are monthly with no minimum term, and there is no build fee.

We haven't put a figure on what Yell charges. Yell sells its websites as part of its advertising packages, so the price depends on the package. Ask Yell for a quote and compare it with ours.

What do you get from Yell?

Yell says its specialists create a professional 30-page website, laid out around the services you offer and the places you want to be found in. It says the site is written to be found by customers and by AI search, is built to SEO best practice as standard, and is kept fresh with blog posts that are included.

Yell sells the website as part of its marketing packages, which it calls Amplify and Accelerate, and says the site is included with them at no extra cost. The same packages include its listings and advertising. So with Yell you are buying an advertising package, and the website is one part of it.

We do one thing. One of our website specialists builds your website, with your domain and hosting, for one monthly price. If you want more later, the customer hub, SEO and business email are add-ons you switch on and off any month, with no minimum term on any of them.

When do you first see your website?

Yell's terms say it starts building your website once you have sent the content it asks for, and that a first preview comes from five days for its standard website and from seven days for its Pro one. Yell says most of its websites go live within 10 working days, once it has your information and your approval.

With us you see a design first. You answer a few questions about your business, what you do, where you work and the colours you like, and a homepage design for your business comes back in about five minutes. There is no card to enter and nobody to speak to first.

If it is not right, ask for another and you get a different design. If you like it, you claim it and one of our website specialists builds the rest of the site with you. Most customers are live within a week, and you pay nothing until your website is live.

So you know what you are getting before you commit to anything, because you have already seen it.

Who makes the changes after launch?

Yell says you get editable access to your website, so you can make updates yourself, and that its team is on hand to help with changes when you need them. Its terms say that complex changes, as Yell decides them, are not part of the amendments it makes under fair use.

With us you never need to log in to an editor. You message your website specialist from your portal, in your own words, and they make the change, usually the same day. It's the same person each time, so they already know your business.

Changes are free for the first 30 days after launch, then one free change every month and £49.99 each for any more, shown before you confirm. One request can hold several changes across the site, so list everything in the one request and it counts once. If something is too big for one change we tell you before we do anything and talk through your options.

What is yours if you leave?

Both of us ask for a 12-month minimum term on the website, so the difference is what happens after it.

Yell's terms say the rights in the content it creates for you belong to Yell and do not pass to you, and that your Yell website cannot be moved to another host without Yell's written agreement. Once everything owed is paid, its terms say Yell may give you the right to use the written words. Yell's terms also say that if Yell registers a domain for your website you own it, and that you can transfer it.

Our terms say that if you leave after your 12-month term and nothing is owed, you can ask us for a copy of your website. Your domain is yours to keep after 12 months, and if you leave we transfer it to you.

So after years of paying for a Yell website, the words and design still belong to Yell. We think that is the wrong way round. Your website was built for your business, from what you told us about it, and you should be able to take it with you.

Read the small print before you sign

Ownership is the big one, but it isn't the only thing in Yell's terms worth knowing before you sign.

Yell's terms say it can update your website from time to time without telling you first. With us you ask for the changes you want, and you can follow each one in your portal.

Yell's terms say that once your contract ends, it isn't responsible for storing any of your website's content, so keeping a backup is down to you. With us, once your 12-month term is done and nothing is owed, you ask for a copy of your website and we send it to you.

Yell's terms say changes it decides are complex fall outside the changes it makes under fair use, and it is Yell that decides. With us the rule is written down: changes are free for the first 30 days after launch, then one free change every month and £49.99 for each one after that. If something is too big for one change, we tell you before we do anything.

Yell's terms also say it only starts building once you have sent it the content it asks for. With us you answer a few questions and see a design straight away, and your website specialist works out the rest with you.

Read Yell's terms yourself before you sign anything. They are public on Yell's website, and the website section is headed Yell Website.

Getting found on Google

People search for the job and the place, like boiler repair Ipswich, roofer near me or end of tenancy clean Leeds. A page for each job, with your town in it and written around the words people type, matches those searches. Yell builds its pages around services and places too, and we agree with it on that.

Yell's strength here is everything around the website. It runs a well known directory and sells paid adverts, and its website sits alongside your listings and reviews. If you want all of that from one company, that counts for a lot.

With us the work is in the website. Every page gets its own title and description, the site has a sitemap and the code behind it that tells Google what you do and where, and it is checked on phones before it goes live. Your portal shows you who is visiting, with no cookies. If you want more, the SEO add-on puts a new article on your site every week and sends you a report every month, monthly with no minimum term. The Local Map Pack sets up your Google Business Profile, paid once.

How do you move from Yell to My Webby?

Yell's terms say the content it created stays Yell's, so we don't copy your Yell website. We build you a new one. Your website specialist asks you about your business, writes new words for it and builds it with your photos.

Your Yell website can stay up while we build. Check your Yell contract for when it ends, and plan the switch for then. When your new website is ready you look at it, tell us what to change, and only then does your domain get pointed at it.

If Yell registered your domain, its terms say it is yours and can be transferred. Your website specialist sorts out the move with you, or points your domain at the new site where it is. Nothing changes for your customers until you have seen the new website and said it is right.

Why My Webby is the better choice

You get a good website built for you, and it's yours to take with you. Answer a few questions, see a design for your business in about five minutes, and if you like it a website specialist builds the rest and has it live, usually within a week. The monthly price covers the website, your domain, hosting and the security certificate, plus backups, updates and website analytics in your portal. The website has a 12-month minimum term and is billed monthly. Add-ons are monthly with no minimum term.

No card to see your design, and nothing to pay until the site is live.

Questions about My Webby vs. Yell

Is My Webby cheaper than Yell?

We don't quote what Yell charges, because Yell sells its websites as part of its advertising packages and the price depends on the package. Our price is on this page and it includes the build, the domain and the hosting. Ask Yell for a quote and compare the two.

Can you move my Yell website over?

Yell's terms say the content it created for you stays Yell's, so we build you a new website rather than copy the old one. Your website specialist writes new words with you, and your Yell site can stay up until the new one is ready.

Do I own my website with Yell?

Yell's terms say the rights in the content it creates for you belong to Yell and don't pass to you, and that your website can't be moved to another host without Yell's written agreement. A domain Yell registers for you is yours, its terms say. Read the website section of Yell's terms before you sign.

Do I own my website with My Webby?

Your domain is yours to keep after 12 months. If you leave after your 12-month term and nothing is owed, you can ask us for a copy of your website, and we transfer your domain to you.

Can I edit the site myself, like on Yell?

No. You message your website specialist and they make the change, usually the same day. You get one free change every month after the first 30 days, and you can follow every change in your portal.

Does My Webby do directory listings and paid adverts like Yell?

We don't run a directory. We do manage Google Ads and Microsoft Ads as add-ons, and the Local Map Pack sets up your Google Business Profile so you can show up on Google Maps.
